Non-statutory Public Consultation on Preferred Option
General Description of the Scheme
The proposed Project will involve the upgrade of part of the R178 Cavan to Dundalk Strategic Regional Road, including the provision of active travel infrastructure, i.e. pedestrian and cycling facilities.
The Project is comprised of 2 schemes, which are in close proximity to each other and so will be progressed together. This Public Consultation covers both schemes, as follows:
Scheme D6 Castlering:
This scheme is located between the townlands of Castlering and Carrickmullen, approximately 6km to the west of Dundalk. Scheme D7 Mullaboy:
This scheme is located between the townlands of Carrickmullen and Mullaboy, approximately 4km to the West of Dundalk.
The existing R178 at these locations has several issues which may impact road safety, such as sub-standard road geometry, forward visibility and junction visibility. There are also no provisions for pedestrians or cyclists along the existing road. The proposed Project will address these deficiencies.
Previous Public Consultation
A public consultation on the Route Options was held in October 2025, and this helped to inform the identification of the Preferred Option.
What’s Happening Now ?
Louth County Council wishes to invite members of the public to participate in this second Non-Statutory Public Consultation on the Preferred Option. The consultation period will run for 3 weeks from Monday 30th March 2026 to Friday 17th April 2026 inclusive.
